Yes, you are absolutely right.

After I put all of these details together, I had a hunch that this problem
happens when I start a landscape profile and switch it to portrait, but I
couldn't reproduce the problem.

I guess my original problem could have something to do with a landscape project
 created with an older version of Kdenlive and then trying to switch this to
portrait.

I further guess it is not worth further pursuing this problem.

I will close/withdraw this ticket.

Thank you guys for all the good work on Kdenlive. I use it a lot.
