Bug ID: 525037
Summary: Add Option "Move to Screen" to Window/Window groups in
the task manager
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First master
Reported In:
Platform: EndeavourOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: Task Manager and Icons-Only Task Manager widgets
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
CC: [email protected]
Target Milestone: 1.0
SUMMARY
The window decorations context menu (Window Operations Menu) and KWin window
management actions include a "Move to Screen" submenu, allowing users to easily
dispatch windows to another connected monitor. However, this action is missing
from the right-click context menu of items in the Task Manager and Icons-Only
Task Manager widgets. Adding a "Move to Screen" action to both individual task
context menus and grouped task context menus would streamline multi-monitor
window management.
USE CASES & RATIONALEHidden Titlebars
- Borderless Windows: Users running windows without client-side decorations or
window borders (e.g., borderless video players, tiled setups, or
full-screen/borderless terminal windows) cannot easily access the titlebar
context menu. The Task Manager context menu is the most accessible GUI entry
point for these windows.
- Off-Screen or Covered Windows: When a monitor is turned off or occluded, or
when a window is covered by other heavy windows, moving the window via its
panel icon is faster than bringing it to focus or using shortcuts.
- Grouped Window Management: For grouped tasks, adding "Move to Screen" under
the group menu allows moving all windows of a specific application (e.g., all
open PDF documents or browser windows) to a secondary monitor in a single
click.
PROPOSED BEHAVIOR
- Single Task Context Menu:
Right-click task icon -> Add a "Move to Screen" submenu listing available
screens (e.g., Screen 1: HDMI-A-1, Screen 2: DP-1).
- Window Group Context Menu:
Right-click grouped task icon -> Add a "Move to Screen" option that dispatches
all windows in that group to the selected display.
- Filtering Consistency:If Task Manager is set to "Show only tasks from the
current screen", moving a task/group away should immediately update the widget
state to reflect its new screen location.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONExisting Tracker:
Related feature requests were previously tracked under Bug 383192 / Bug 424391.
Relevance: Highly beneficial for Wayland multi-monitor setups where window
repositioning via third-party tools is restricted.
