DESCRIPTION
Occasionally when I connect my laptop (Lenovo X1 Carbon 13th gen, updated
Fedora 44) to an external screen (or two), I face a situation when two screens
have the same priority in KScreen, usually leading to panels being placed on
wrong screens.
Because it's a bit difficult to reproduce, I think it has something to do with
my setup, so here goes.
When I have access to external screens, I usually employ my laptop as a sort of
HUD; what matters here is that I set the external screen (or one of external
screens, always the same one) to be primary in Display Configuration. Normally,
once I set it up on a given place, I don't normally need to rewire that.
Occasionally, however, I discover that my panels land on wrong screens and when
I enter Display Configuration I discover that the internal laptop display is
(still) marked as Primary - while the external one I marked prior remains
Primary too. If I have two displays connected it's easy to rectify - open the
list of monitors in Display Configuration, move the Primary-contenders in the
list around and the one moved below loses its Primary mark. If there's only one
external monitor, I can't fix that in GUI - I have to call something to the
effect of "kscreen-doctor output.2.priority.2" ("output.2" is my internal
laptop screen in this case).
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Unfortunately, I don't know of a reliable repro for this; but here's roughly
the sequence:
1. Connect the laptop to an external monitor
2. Open Display Configuration; set the external monitor as Primary
3. Disconnect; do other stuff; sleep the laptop, go to another place, connect
to another monitor, etc.
4. Connect the laptop again to the place from step 1; whether sleeping or
awake, doesn't seem to matter.
5. Open Display Configuration
OBSERVED RESULT
Occasionally, both the internal and the external display show up as Primary.
"kscreen-doctor -o" shows both contenders to have Priority 1.
EXPECTED RESULT
Only one Primary screen, the one set in step 1.
