I have some additional information. 

When using the menu item Transaction > New Transaction, had the date filled in
(as opposed to being blank), and the usual date modification keys seemed to
work. For example, using the up and down arrows to change dates, or 't' to fill
in the current date.  So the crash happened when bringing up the new
transaction for with a keyboard shortcut, but not from the menu item.

Next, I used Settings > Configure Keyboard Shortcuts to bring up the sortcut
mapping dialog, and clicked "Defaults". This resulted in "New Transaction"
being bound to Ctrl+Insert, rather than Ctrl+Shift+Insert.  When the new
transaction form is invoked via Ctrl+Insert the date field is populated, and
pressing 't' does not cause a SEGV.
