Suspending via the suspend button does immediately show the failed login attempt. Once i wake it up again it does trigger the wait timer which prevents me from immediately unlocking the device. The same exact issue happens when the device suspends by itself and every time i wake it up by keyboard, touchpad or lid, I have to wait a couple seconds to insert my password.
