Merely the UI dipping away automatically after entering full screen will do this. I propose a simple solution: Reload the image after the first time that particular animation plays in that particular state. This will force the zombie blits to be overwritten with that of the current image. This should work nicely since it's only in that one case where zombie blits occur, and it would be a shame to miss out on the benefits of OpenGL rendering everywhere else.
