DESCRIPTION
On ThinkPad E14 Gen 6, with Ryzen 7 7735U, screen started flickering on the
edges ~1 cm from edge. Started after updating from Fedora 43 KDE Plasma to
Fedora 44 KDE Plasma.
Comment from 2nd day of troubleshooting: It seems that flicker subsides slowly
in ~15 minutes to a point that it is not mostly disruptive. (Propably things
below I tested first did nothing, flicker just subsided nevertheless.)
Before updating Fedora, I updated system (maybe 2-4 weeks worth of updates),
did not observe changes at that point. IIRC flicker did not start right away,
not before I ran "sudo dnf update", or not immediately after. That last update
did not add anything, only removed some kernel related packages, IIRC.
In an hour, when I continued to use this machine, I saw the flicker first time.
Reboots, updates etc. did nothing. I tried possible fixes from online:
- editing /etc/default/grub with: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rhgb quiet
amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10",
- changing power settings, power save / balanced / performance,
- changing adaptive sync setting: Never / Automatic / Always,
- changing resolution,
- changing refresh rate (impossible, only 60,03 Hz available).
None removed flicker. Latter may have some effect on it, but does not resolve
issue by itself.
I ran Thinkpad's system diagnosis via BIOS (quick, attended). Flicker was
visible in menus, but not visible or difficult to see during test images. All
tests passed.
However, after this, flicker seemed to stabilise, and I though that something I
did fixed it.
Then, I realised that It was not possible to change screen brightness. I tried
to change with:
- Fn-keys, nope. Brighness change pop-up mid screen comes as expected.
- Brightness & color widget, nope. Possible to change values.
- Display configuration - system settings, nope. Same here.
- Light (sudo dnf install light), nope. I was not able to change screen
brightness. However I was able to change others, (mic-mute, keyboard
backlight). Trying to change screen brightness with "light" does nothing. It
won't even change values in UI.
Also, whenever system tries to change screen brightness, there is serious lag,
up to several seconds. This happens when using any normal interface for
changing it. There is also a lag spike when system tries to change brightness
automatically (dimming in certain scenarios, I don't remember how I did it
yesterday. At least when screen is set to turn off, that comes with lag.

Attached are:

I combined these, as only one attachement possible:
- journalctl.txt, includes possibly relevant items from journal
- plasmashell-log.txt, copy paste from konsole after journalctl
/usr/bin/plasmashell -f 2> plasmashell.log, because ->
- plasmashell.log, seems to empty
- light -help, output from that command (Should I try some other command with
this utility?)

It seems I am not the first one with flicker problems. However, I did not find
clear duplicates for this or these. I wonder if this is a regression caused by
fixing other AMD flickers, if this has anything to with AMD's automatic
brightness controls, or if I have a proper mix of hardware that would require
it's own quirks. (Laptop ordered by lenovo.com, but customised combination of
options: CPU, screen etc.)
This might be something that would be fixed already by plasma 6.8, but at the
moment I was not really ready to test the beta on this machine, as I don't want
introduce possible further problems for the main user.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Get 21M3CTO1WW (or similar Thinkpad with AMD Ryzen 7 7735U with Radeon
Graphics)
2. Install Fedora 44 KDE Plasma
3. Boot machine into log-in screen
(That's best I can guess)
OBSERVED RESULT
Screen flickers from edges, effects subsides in around 15 minutes.
Cannot change screen brightness.
Attempts to change brightness manually or by system cause lag spikes.
EXPECTED RESULT
Normal vision.
Possible to change brightness etc.
