Bug ID: 526348
Summary: Inefficient conversion to another format (avif)
Classification: Applications
Product: Koko
Version First 26.08.0

Status: REPORTED

DESCRIPTION
I cropped photographs in the Koko Photos software, then I saved them as avif.
I discovered that they are quite badly encoded, compared to the standard
imagemagick conversion: the saved image has a much bigger size.
First, let me mention that I don’t like the interface of this replacement for
Gwenview: the editing features aren’t accessible directly; you have to first
click on edit (or use a shortcut) for each image, then there is no shortcut to
access let’s say the crop feature : you have to use the mouse and thus loose
focus of your actions. With Gwenview, it was simple and direct!
So, in my experience, images compressed as .avif have the best standard
compression, compared to webp, heif or jxl. But when I save my images from Koko
Photos, their size is bigger than or comparable with the lossless png. It looks
like this should be optimised.
I haven’t tried other formats, but I wouldn’t be surprised they have the same
problem.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. In Koko Photos, save an image as .png. Or just open a .png.
2. In Koko Photos, convert the same one as .avif.
3. Run magick photo_step1.png photo_step1.avif.
4. Compare the two .avif files.
OBSERVED RESULT
The .avif at step 2 has more or less the same size as the png, often bigger !
That’s unexpected for a lossy conversion compared with a lossless one.
The .avif at step 2 is much bigger than the .avif at step 3.
EXPECTED RESULT
Images compressed as .avif should have one of the best standard compression;
imagemagick conversion is efficent, so should be Koko Photos.
