Summary: Android keyboard not showing in Waydroid
    Classification: Applications
           Product: kdeconnect
      Version First unspecified
       Reported In:
          Platform: Kubuntu
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: android-application
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
                CC: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

DESCRIPTION
When running kde connect in Waydroid "Remote input" does not show any keyboard
(tt9) input when clicking on "Show keyboard" and neither when ticking the
setting "show keyboard initially". The only option to make the android keyboard
appear and send text is via the "compose text" option.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install kde connect 1.35.17 in Waydroid in Kubuntu 26.04.
2. Install kde connect on Kubuntu
3. Pair kde connect in Waydroid and Kubuntu
4. On kde connect in Waydroid click "Remote Input"
5. Click "Show Keyboard" and in settings tick "Show keyboard intitially"

OBSERVED RESULT
Android onscreen keyboard (tt9) is not showing. It only correctly shows up in
"Compose text".

EXPECTED RESULT
Android keyboard should be shown when clicking "show keyboard" enabling direct
text input.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System (available in the Info Center app, or by running `kinfo` in a
terminal window): Waydroid (20-20260403-VANILLA-waydroid_x86_64)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0.
Qt Version: 6.10.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

I am trying to type in an Android onscreen keyboard (tt9) into programs running
on Kubuntu 26.04. I followed Many-Conversation963 instruction in a reddit post:

This worked for me on Gboard: Run waydroid in a wayland compositor (using
weston), then set weston KWinRules (kde syssettings>winmanagement>kwinrules
press add new then pick proprieties and click on the weston window. add
everything.) then add prop FOCUS STEALING PREVENTIONS set to force extreme and
ACCEPT FOCCUS set force no. after that install kde connect on both hosts and
they should automatically connect via the wifi bridge. now open remote control
on the kde-connect on waydroid and have fun!

Note that you need to disable the kwinrule to launch waydroid since it
prevents weston frol stealing the keyboard input

I have Waydroid running in Weston and installed kde connect 1.35.17 both in
Waydroid and the Kubuntu 26.04.

What works: I can type in the “Compose Text” with the Android onscreen keyboard
and send it successfully to any app running in Kubuntu.

What does not work: When opening Remote Control the Android keyboard does not
show up even when pressing the “show keyboard” button at the top right corner.
Ticking the “show keyboard initially” setting does also not work. The keyboard
will only show up in the “Compose Text” tab. So I cannot directly type into
Kubuntu app and have to use the “Compose Text” workaround. The keyboard also
does not show up when running kde connect directly in Waydroid without Weston.
