Bug ID: 526659
Summary: Desktop stays black for 26 seconds after login on
Plasma 6.6.6, same with a new user and on X11
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First 6.6.5
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: Startup process
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
CC: [email protected]
Target Milestone: 1.0
DESCRIPTION
After login, restored applications start immediately, but the desktop stays
black and is not usable for about 26 seconds. Every login.
journalctl --user:
plasmashell started 23:38:03
next plasmashell line 23:38:29:
Failed to register with host portal, Connection already associated with an
application ID
23:38:32: GPL Ghostscript 10.06.0: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1
Same 26 second gap on every login. Main-thread strace over that window: 0.27 s
in syscalls. perf: about 1 s CPU in 25 s wall time.
Same delay with a new user.
Same delay on Plasma X11.
Kisak Mesa purged, Ubuntu mesa restored: no change.
Extra disks commented out in fstab and USB disks unplugged: delay rose to 80 s.
Autostart emptied: no change.
xdg-desktop-portal-gtk masked: no change.
KSplash dbus service disabled: login screen immediate, desktop delay remains.
Kubuntu 26.04, Plasma 6.6, Qt 6.10.2
Not the same as bug 2158921: there X11 is fast, here X11 is slow.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Start Kubuntu 26.04 and log into a Plasma session, Wayland or X11.
Wait until restored applications appear.
Try to use the desktop.
OBSERVED RESULT
Restored applications start immediately. The desktop stays black and is not
usable for about 26 seconds. Then the wallpaper and desktop become usable. The
same delay happens for a newly created user. journalctl --user shows
plasmashell starting, then no plasmashell line for 26 seconds, then: Failed to
register with host portal, Connection already associated with an application
ID. About three seconds later: GPL Ghostscript 10.06.0: Unrecoverable error,
exit code 1. Main-thread strace over that window shows 0.27 s in syscalls. perf
shows about 1 s of CPU time in 25 s of wall time.
EXPECTED RESULT
The desktop is usable within a few seconds after login, as soon as the restored
applications are visible.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Kubuntu 26.04 (kinfo reports "Ubuntu 13")
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.6
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Same delay on Plasma X11. Kisak Mesa was purged and Ubuntu mesa restored, no
change. Extra NTFS mounts were commented out in fstab and USB disks unplugged,
the delay rose to 80 seconds. Autostart was emptied, no change.
xdg-desktop-portal-gtk was masked, no change. The KSplash dbus service was
disabled, the login screen became immediate, the desktop delay remained. This
