Bug ID: 526982
Summary: HDR calibration lacks GUI option to restore
EDID-reported peak brightness

Description
KDE Plasma allows users to manually override their monitor's HDR peak
brightness through Display Configuration / HDR calibration, but provides no
graphical option to remove that override and return to the monitor's
EDID-reported value.
Once a user changes the peak brightness, the only way to restore the original
automatic behavior appears to be through kscreen-doctor.
This is a usability issue because a setting introduced through the GUI cannot
be reverted through the same GUI.
Steps to reproduce
Open System Settings → Display & Monitor → Display Configuration.
Enable HDR on a compatible monitor.
Use HDR calibration to change the peak brightness.
Attempt to restore the original EDID-reported peak brightness without using the
terminal.
Actual result
There is no obvious option to disable the manually configured peak-brightness
override and return to the monitor's original EDID value.
Manually entering the original brightness value is not equivalent to disabling
the override, since the value remains explicitly configured rather than
automatically obtained from the display.
The only working solution I found was:
kscreen-doctor output.HDMI-A-1.maxBrightnessOverride.disable
After running this command, kscreen-doctor -o reported:
Peak brightness: 604 nits
Max average brightness: 277 nits
HDR color profile source: EDID
Expected result
The Display Configuration GUI should provide an easily discoverable way to:
Restore the monitor's EDID-reported HDR brightness values.
Disable manually configured brightness overrides.
Clearly indicate whether HDR brightness values are automatically detected or
manually overridden.
A simple "Use display defaults (EDID)" or "Reset HDR calibration" option would
address this.
System information
KDE Plasma: 6.7.5
Distribution: CachyOS
Session: Wayland
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080
Connection: HDMI
HDR: Enabled
Additional information
This appears related to Bug #525043, which also concerns HDR brightness
overrides that cannot be reset through the GUI.
The underlying functionality to disable the override already exists in
kscreen-doctor. The request is to expose an equivalent option in the graphical
interface.
Users should not need to discover terminal commands to undo configuration
changes made through System Settings.
