Additional findings: Possible display configuration migration issue in Plasma
6.8.0

After further investigation, I have found a working solution and gathered
additional information that may help identify the actual cause of this
regression.

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION

My original monitor configuration was created using KDE Plasma's graphical
Display Configuration tool in System Settings.

I did not manually configure overlapping monitor coordinates through the
command line.

Before upgrading to Plasma 6.8.0, my primary monitor was mirrored to my Samsung
TV, allowing me to play games on the TV without moving application windows or
changing the output monitor in individual games.

This configuration worked correctly under Plasma 6.7.5.

It is therefore possible that Plasma 6.8.0 incorrectly migrated or restored my
existing display configuration during the upgrade.

However, I cannot confirm this yet, since I did not record the replication
source values before upgrading.

INITIAL STATE AFTER UPGRADING TO PLASMA 6.8.0

HDMI-A-1 (Primary monitor):
Resolution: 1920x1080
Refresh rate: 200 Hz
Position: 0,0
Replication source: 0

DP-2 (Secondary monitor):
Resolution: 1920x1080
Refresh rate: 100 Hz
Position: 1920,0
Replication source: 0

DP-1 (Samsung TV):
Resolution: 1920x1080
Refresh rate: 60 Hz
Position: 0,0
Replication source: 0

Both HDMI-A-1 and DP-1 were positioned at 0,0, but neither output was
configured as a replication source for the other.

In this state, all existing desktop icons disappeared from the primary monitor.

FIRST SUCCESSFUL TEST

I disabled the Samsung TV using:

kscreen-doctor output.DP-1.disable

Immediately after executing this command, all missing desktop icons reappeared
on the primary monitor.

No Plasma restart, logout, or configuration reset was necessary.

SECOND SUCCESSFUL TEST

I re-enabled the Samsung TV, positioning it as an independent display to the
right of the other monitors:

kscreen-doctor output.DP-1.enable output.DP-1.position.3840,0

The desktop icons remained visible on both regular monitors.

This suggests that the presence of a third monitor itself is not responsible
for the problem.

THIRD SUCCESSFUL TEST: CORRECT DISPLAY MIRRORING

I then configured the Samsung TV to mirror my primary monitor using:

kscreen-doctor output.DP-1.mirror.HDMI-A-1

After executing this command, KScreen reported:

DP-1:
Replication source: 3
Geometry: 3840,0 1920x1080

HDMI-A-1:
Replication source: 0
Geometry: 0,0 1920x1080

The replication source value of 3 correctly referred to HDMI-A-1.

The TV immediately displayed the same image as my primary monitor, and all
desktop icons remained visible.

REBOOT TEST

I restarted the computer to verify whether the new configuration would be
preserved.

After rebooting:

1. All desktop icons remained visible.
2. The Samsung TV continued mirroring the primary monitor correctly.
3. KScreen still reported replication source 3 for DP-1.
4. Plasma 6.8.0 continued working without requiring a downgrade.

The workaround therefore survives a complete system restart.

POSSIBLE ROOT CAUSE

Based on these findings, I suspect that Plasma 6.8.0 may have incorrectly
restored or migrated an existing display mirroring configuration created
through KDE System Settings.

It appears that two outputs were active at the same logical coordinates without
a proper replication relationship.

This configuration may cause Plasma's Folder View to assign or display desktop
icons incorrectly.

The issue disappears immediately when the overlapping output is disabled, and
it remains resolved when proper display replication is configured.

However, I cannot determine whether the incorrect configuration was introduced
during the upgrade, whether it already existed under Plasma 6.7.5, or whether
Plasma 6.8.0 simply handles this configuration differently.

CONCLUSION

The issue is now resolved on my system without downgrading Plasma.

The confirmed workaround is:

1. Disable the affected TV output.
2. Re-enable it at a non-overlapping position.
3. Configure actual display mirroring using KScreen instead of relying on
identical monitor coordinates.

I believe this information may be useful for investigating how Plasma 6.8.0
handles existing multi-monitor configurations, especially when two outputs
share the same position.

It would also be worth investigating whether the display configuration
migration or restoration process can leave previously mirrored outputs in an
inconsistent state.

I am happy to provide further diagnostic information if needed.

One additional detail regarding my original monitor setup:

The Samsung TV was permanently configured to mirror my primary monitor through
KDE System Settings while running Plasma 6.7.5.

I did not manually enable or disable mirroring depending on whether I wanted to
use the TV.

The TV remained physically connected to my computer at all times and was
normally left in standby mode when not in use.

This configuration worked correctly under Plasma 6.7.5, including when the TV
was in standby.

This may be relevant when investigating whether Plasma 6.8.0 incorrectly
restores an existing display mirroring configuration, particularly when a
connected display is in standby during startup or an upgrade.
