Bug ID: 527272
Summary: Add an on/off switch to fully stop the background
service (and its persistent notification) on demand
Classification: Applications
Product: kdeconnect
Version First unspecified
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: android-application

Target Milestone: ---
KDE Connect on Android keeps a background service running permanently, with a
persistent notification. Closing the app does not stop it, and there is no
setting to turn it off. The only way to stop it is Android's "Force stop" in
system settings. That is a troubleshooting tool, not a normal way to use an
app, and it does not give a lasting "off" state.
What I would like: a switch in the app settings that enables or disables the
background service. When disabled, the app does not run at all (no service, no
notification, no discovery) until I enable it again or open the app. The
default behaviour could stay exactly as it is today, so people who want the
always-on behaviour are not affected.
Use case: I only want KDE Connect to run when I decide to use it, not all the
time.
Why this is not a duplicate / what has been said before:
- Bug 401880 (December 2018) asked to be able to fully close the app. It was
closed as INTENTIONAL, because the service runs so the phone can discover and
connect to devices on the network. The reporter's follow-up suggestion of a
user setting to turn the app off was not addressed:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=401880
- Bug 401028 (November 2018, last comment January 2023) asked about the
persistent notification and suggested a "Quit" button. It was closed as NOT A
BUG, because the notification is required for background services on Android
8+. Nobody answered the January 2023 question about keeping the service running
without the notification: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=401028
- KDE Discuss thread "It would be nice to have an 'Exit' button somewhere"
(September 2023) shows the same request from several users, with the suggestion
of a global on/off switch or a per-device switch. No developer replied:
https://discuss.kde.org/t/it-would-be-nice-to-have-an-exit-button-somewhere/5474
I understand the service is needed for device discovery, so I am not asking to
remove it or to change the default. I am asking for an opt-in way to turn it
off. The existing "Trusted networks" setting limits discovery to chosen Wi-Fi
networks, but it does not stop the service or hide the notification.
Environment:
- KDE Connect Android version: 1.36.0
- Android version: 16 (iodéOS 7.9)
- Phone model: Samsung Galaxy S10
- Installed from: F-Droid
