--- Comment #1 from [email protected] <[email protected]> ---
I am experiencing the same issue and managed to resolve it.

- On KDE Plasma in dark mode, Plasma sets the active icon theme to breeze-dark,
which supplies modern light-colored SVGs for tools
- On GNOME (and other non-Plasma environments), the system icon theme is
Yaru-dark or Adwaita-dark. These desktop themes do not provide
KolourPaint-specific tool action icons (tool_pen, tool_brush, tool_line,
tool_eraser, tool_rectangle, etc.).

1. When these icons aren't found in the active desktop theme, KolourPaint falls
back to its own bundled application icons installed in
`${KDE_INSTALL_DATADIR}/kolourpaint/icons/hicolor/` (from `pics/action/` in the
source repository).
2. The bundled fallback assets in `pics/action/` (both the fixed-size PNGs and
SVGs) date back to ~2003 and have hard-coded dark colors (#000000 and #313436)
with no dark-mode awareness.
3. In addition, libKF6BreezeIcons registers 'breeze' (the light theme) as the
hard-coded fallback via QIcon::setFallbackThemeName("breeze"). It doesn't
detect GNOME's dark mode to select breeze-dark.

As a result, on any dark GTK/GNOME desktop, the toolbar background is dark
charcoal (`#2a2a2a`) while the tool icons are rendered in hard-coded #000000 /
#313436, making the left toolbar buttons invisible.

Fix:
Modernize the fallback icons in `pics/action/` by replacing the legacy
hard-coded SVGs/PNGs with adaptive SVGs. This ensures the tool icons
automatically inherit the palette text color (white on dark backgrounds, dark
on light backgrounds) across all desktop environments. Ubuntu should also
package `kf6-breeze-icon-theme` as a dependency.
