This is the "Limit to Home Directory" option of the Folders panel, which is enabled by default. Right-click in the Folders panel and uncheck "Limit to Home Directory". The tree then always starts at /, so the other drives stay visible and the expanded folders are kept when you move between your home folder and other places.
