            Bug ID: 527398
Summary: Multiple issues with pre-installed Steam window rule
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: kwin
      Version First 6.8.0
       Reported In:
          Platform: Arch Linux
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

KDE Plasma release 6.8.0 added a pre-made and pre-enabled window rule for Steam
to draw shadows for its windows, so it feels more natural in the KDE Plasma
desktop.

However, this presents multiple issues:

1. The window rules are a place that only the user should touch; at least, that
is how I always felt about the Window Rules section of the System Settings app.
Having a window rule there just like any other user rule feels wrong. There
should be, at least, a separation between "User Window Rules" and "System
Window Rules", if we are going to keep this Steam window rule.

2. With this rule, Steam feels laggy — for instance, test closing the Steam
Client's Friends window with and without the window rule enabled. Without it,
the window disappears instantly, but with the window rule, there is a delay
because of the shadow, creating a translucent which is visible for a brief
moment, making it feel like the app has some kind of bug. Steam already does
not play nice, since it forces its own titlebar and frame.

3. It is not possible to delete the rule. An empty rule is always re-created in
its place instead. It is only possible to deactivate the rule, but then you
have an empty rule with no name that is stuck there.

4. It does not seem right to make an exception solely for Steam (or any other
app, to be clear). Also, even though I doubt "steamwebhelper steam" would match
anything else than Steam from Valve Software, it also falls victim of possibly
applying the rule to any other app that just happens to match the rule. In the
future, if we add more rules, it will become even more of a problem. Not making
an exception solely for Steam also solves problem number one.
