Bug ID: 527430
Summary: Plasma 6.8.0 Wayland: black screen with mouse cursor
after login on NVIDIA RTX 4080
(GL_FRAMEBUFFER_INCOMPLETE_ATTACHMENT, atomic commit
EACCESS)
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.8.0
Reported In:
Platform: CachyOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: major
Priority: NOR
Component: platform-drm
Assignee: [email protected]

Target Milestone: ---
After upgrading from Plasma/KWin 6.7.5 to 6.8.0, logging into the Wayland
session shows the Plasma 6.8 splash and then a black screen with a working
mouse cursor. The desktop does not come up. Restoring the pre-upgrade system,
with the same NVIDIA driver, brings the desktop back.
This is a regression. Plasma 6.7.5 on this machine was fine. Every boot of the
6.8.0 upgrade failed the same way (four attempts). The 6.8.0 system was not
upgraded again after the restore.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. CachyOS, Plasma Wayland, monitors connected to an NVIDIA RTX 4080. An Intel
iGPU is also present. The displays are on the NVIDIA card.
2. Upgrade KWin and Plasma from 6.7.5 to 6.8.0, and the CachyOS kernel from
7.2.9 to 7.2.11, as listed below. nvidia-utils stayed at 615.78.08.
3. Reboot and log in.
OBSERVED RESULT
The login splash appears, then the session is a black screen with only the
mouse cursor.
KWin, from a failed boot on 2026-10-19 16:46 CEST:
Invalid framebuffer status: "GL_FRAMEBUFFER_INCOMPLETE_ATTACHMENT"
Atomic commit failed: EACCESS
drmModeListLessees() failed: Permission denied
On the first failed boot, KWin also logged "Applying output configuration
failed: EACCESS".
plasmashell then crash-looped:
The backend got an unknown wallpaper provider type. The wallpaper will now
fall back to the default.
QQmlComponent: Component is not ready
segfault at 8 in libQt6Quick.so.6.12.0
plasma-plasmashell.service: Main process exited, code=dumped, status=11/SEGV
systemd restarted it and it crashed the same way
The first crash's stack went through QQuickItem::setParentItem and
PlasmaQuick::ContainmentView::setSource, with libnvidia-eglcore.so.615.78.08
and libnvidia-egl-wayland2.so.1 on the stack.
EXPECTED RESULT
The Plasma desktop, panels, and wallpaper appear, as they do on 6.7.5.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Broken boot:
Operating System: CachyOS
KDE Plasma: 6.8.0 (plasma-workspace 6.8.0-1.1, plasma-desktop 6.8.0-1.1,
libplasma 6.8.0-1.1)
KWin: 6.8.0-1.1
plasma-login-manager: 6.8.0-1
Qt: 6.12.0 (qt6-base 6.12.0-3.1, crash in libQt6Quick.so.6.12.0)
Kernel: 7.2.11-1-cachyos
Graphics platform: Wayland
NVIDIA: open kernel module and nvidia-utils both 615.78.08
(linux-cachyos-nvidia-open 7.2.11-1). nvidia-utils was not part of this
upgrade.
Working boot, restored from the pre-upgrade snapshot:
KWin / Plasma 6.7.5-3.1
Kernel 7.2.9-2-cachyos
linux-cachyos-nvidia-open 7.2.9-2
Same nvidia-utils 615.78.08-2
HARDWARE
CPU: Intel Core i7-14700
iGPU: Intel Raptor Lake-S GT1 UHD Graphics 770 [8086:a780]
GPU: NVIDIA AD103 GeForce RTX 4080 [10de:2704]
Outputs on the NVIDIA card:
DP-2 3840x2160 @ 239.99 Hz, scale 1.7, primary, HDR disabled, VRR off
DP-1 2560x1440 @ 75 Hz, scale 1, HDR disabled, VRR off
DP-3 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz, scale 1.7, HDR disabled, VRR off
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The NVIDIA userspace driver did not change between the working 6.7.5 session
and the broken 6.8.0 session. The new kernel's open module reports the same
615.78.08 version.
Older reports of GL_FRAMEBUFFER_INCOMPLETE_ATTACHMENT (bug 522969, bug 525029)
are from Plasma 6.7 on other NVIDIA cards. This one started on the first login
after the 6.8.0 upgrade, from a session that had been working on 6.7.5.
Workaround: boot the pre-upgrade snapshot and restore it as the normal root. Do
not boot the 6.8.0 system.
