Bug ID: 527426
Summary: Screen flickering on mouse movement in 6.8 on nouveau
(NV108), seizure warning
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.8.0
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: major
Priority: NOR
Component: wayland-generic
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
KDE Plasma 6.8 introduces screen flickering on my old graphics card when I move
my mouse, which may cause seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
I tried to use kde-builder to pinpoint the exact commit in kwin, but had too
many issues compiling anything earlier than 6.8, so I couldn't bisect,
unfortunately. At least now that my system uses the kwin_wayland in my home
directory and the flickering stays, we can say it's probably not an Arch Linux
problem. GNOME doesn't have flickering either.
Moving your mouse too fast to make the cursor big stops the flickering, but
only while this desktop effect is running.
Setting `export KWIN_DRM_DISABLE_TRIPLE_BUFFERING=1` or `export
KWIN_TRIPLE_BUFFER=0` or both in (manually created)
`~/.config/plasma-workspace/env/disable-triple-buffering.sh` doesn't help.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start a KDE Wayland (well, you can't choose anymore!) session on 6.8.
2. Move your mouse.
OBSERVED RESULT
Screen switches between normal picture and black screen every frame, it seems.
Doesn't get captured on Spectacle and my phones are apparently too slow (I
think 30 FPS while my screen is 60 Hz) to capture the flashing light. Sometimes
ends in a black frame. See the attached videos.
EXPECTED RESULT
Screen doesn't flicker.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
$ kinfo
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
Qt Version: 6.12.0
Kernel Version: 7.2.11-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i5-4440 CPU @ 3.10GHz
Memory: 12 GiB of RAM (11.6 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: GeForce GT 635
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I think there's a certain kde-builder function that lets you install the
necessary system packages, and in my case I also had to install
extra-cmake-modules and plasma-wayland-protocols. Unfortunately, I didn't
document all of my troubles with kde-builder and/or git bisect to make a proper
bug/wish report/submission.
