Bug ID: 527450
Summary: KWin applies previously ignored window rules after
upgrading to Plasma 6.8
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.8.0
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
After upgrading from Plasma 6.7 to 6.8 (stable releases), previously deleted or
invalid entries in kwinrulesrc with no window class or other identifying
criteria may become active and apply globally.
These rules appear as unnamed entries in `Settings > Window Management > Window
Rules`. In my case, and in the case of user elBoberido (discussion on KDE
Discuss: https://discuss.kde.org/t/plasma-6-8-huge-osd-and-containers/51030/13
), the rules contained a *size* property with a large value, causing oversized
OSDs and Plasma widget containers.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
The following steps describe a possible reproduction scenario; I cannot
guarantee that they reliably reproduce the issue after the 6.8 update.
1. In Plasma 6.7, create some window rules using the `System Settings` app,
apply them, and then delete them. Possibly, take note of kwinrulesrc for
invalid/deleted entries at this point.
2. Upgrade to Plasma 6.8.
3. Open `Settings > Window Management > Window Rules` and check for unnamed
rules. Inspect `kwinrulesrc` for invalid/deleted entries.
OBSERVED RESULT
Some deleted or invalid entries should appear in the Settings app, even though
they were deleted or previously invalid and ignored by kwin.
EXPECTED RESULT
Deleted rules should not reappear or become active after upgrading. Invalid or
obsolete entries should not be applied as active window rules.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
Qt Version: 6.12.0
Kernel Version: 7.2.10-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The size property appears to be responsible for the oversized OSDs and widget
containers in the cases reported so far. Other user rules may contain different
properties.
I do not believe the issue is necessarily in KWin's logic: manually creating a
rule with a size property and no window class criteria reproduces the oversized
elements. The main question is why these entries persist in kwinrulesrc and
become active after upgrading to Plasma 6.8, when they were previously ignored
or had been deleted.
User elBoberido provided the following configuration before and after
upgrading, which may help identify the cause.
