DESCRIPTION
all steam games, some faster than others, crash by freezing the game window.
this does not affect the rest of the system. game background sound continues
but active combat noises cease immediately.
steam was installed via a deb file downloaded from steam's official website. i
have been able to reproduce this issue on two separate pc's, both running
kubuntu.
right before submitting this i found a semi work around by going into steam >
settings > in game > and disabling the first option; enable the steam overlay
while in-game. a few weeks ago i think was when i first started noticing
occasional crashing which quickly progressed to unplayable recently. game when
initially launched works fine though i have noticed on occasion a large
horizontal screen tear.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. install steam via deb file from official website
2. download example game, the fastest to crash i saw was star trek online which
tends to crash sub 2 minutes outside of combat and sub 30 seconds in combat
3. launch sto and select character to enter actual game. from there do whatever
you please for that minute before the screen freezes.
other games had less sever responses, such as warhammer 40k rogue trader i left
it running around 30 minutes without it freezing but the second i tab out and
back in, locked up. this game wasn't nearly as repeatable though it would
always crash within 30-60 minutes if i was tabbing out as i usually do to chat,
swap videos or w/e.
OBSERVED RESULT
freezing of game screen seemingly linked to steams in-game overlay
EXPECTED RESULT
a lack of freezing.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System (available in the Info Center app, or by running `kinfo` in a
terminal window):
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.6 on both office pc and the secondary pc in the front
room.
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
i have updated everything via discovery and using sudo apt update and sudo apt
upgrade hoping that would fix it. the linked log someone helped guide me
through to make and then prompted me to to report it calling it an unnamed
error. hope all this helps.
