            Bug ID: 527497
           Summary: macOS: allow user-installed icon themes and color
                    schemes (search ~/Library/Application Support)
    Classification: Applications
           Product: digikam
      Version First 9.1.0
       Reported In:
          Platform: macOS (DMG)
                OS: macOS
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: Usability-Themes
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

digiKam 9.1.0, macOS bundle from digikam.org (ad-hoc signed), Apple Silicon (M1
Max), macOS 26.6.2.

On macOS, digiKam only searches inside the application bundle for icon themes
and color
schemes. There is no per-user location, so adding a theme requires modifying
the root-owned,
ad-hoc-signed digikam.app (sudo + re-sign), and every update erases the change.

Steps to reproduce
1. Install a valid freedesktop icon theme to ~/Library/Application
Support/icons/<Name>/
   (index.theme + SVGs; e.g. Breeze with recoloured places/*/folder.svg,
Inherits=breeze).
2. Install a KDE .colors file to ~/Library/Application
Support/digikam/colorschemes/.
3. Set [General Settings] "Icon Theme=<Name>" in
~/Library/Preferences/digikamrc and
   [Icons] Theme=<Name> in ~/Library/Preferences/kdeglobals (the Setup menu
can't select it).
4. Start digiKam with
QT_LOGGING_RULES="qt.gui.icon.loader=true;kf.iconthemes=true;digikam.widgets=true".

Observed (log excerpt)
  kf.iconthemes: KIconTheme::initTheme() enforces the icon theme: "<Name>"
  qt.gui.icon.loader: Setting theme search path to QList(":/icons",
      "/Applications/digiKam.org/digikam.app/Contents/Resources/icons")
  kf.iconthemes: Icon theme "<Name>" not found.
  qt.gui.icon.loader: Probing theme file at
".../Contents/Resources/icons/<Name>/index.theme" false
  digikam.widgets: Paths to color scheme :
QList(".../Contents/Resources/digikam/colorschemes")

~/Library/Application Support/icons exists but is not in the search path, and
the color scheme
in ~/Library/Application Support/digikam/colorschemes is not listed under
Settings > Themes.
Setting XDG_DATA_DIRS / XDG_DATA_HOME before launch has no effect on either
path.

Separately, Setup > Miscellaneous > Appearance > Icon theme only lists a
hard-coded whitelist
(adwaita, breeze, breeze-dark, faenza, faenza-ambiance, humanity, oxygen;
setupmisc.cpp), so a
theme that is found still cannot be chosen there.

Expected / request
On macOS, include the per-user data location (~/Library/Application Support and
~/Library/Application Support/digikam) in the icon theme and color scheme
search paths, and list
valid themes found there (e.g. marked "user-installed") instead of only the
whitelist.

Use case: Breeze folder icons are drawn with ColorScheme-Accent, so their
colour follows the accent
colour. I'd like a non-blue palette (e.g. Catppuccin, Nord color schemes;
Papirus icons) without
editing the signed bundle. I understand bug 365262 stopped reading *desktop*
color schemes for
readability reasons; a digiKam-specific user folder would keep that control
while allowing user
choice.
