SUMMARY
After upgrading to Plasma 6.8.0, playing video in fullscreen on the laptop's
built-in display shows horizontal stripes of colored noise flickering over the
picture. They disappear on pause (so screenshots are not possible), and
disappear when the window is not fullscreen. The external HDMI monitor
(2560x1440) is not affected.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Wayland session, built-in 1920x1080 display, 60 Hz, scale 125%.
2. Play any video in fullscreen (reproduced with Haruna/libmpv, VLC, flatpak
mpv).
3. Observe stripes of colored noise over the picture.
OBSERVED RESULT
Short horizontal stripes of colored noise over the video, only in fullscreen,
only on the internal eDP panel.
EXPECTED RESULT
Clean picture, as before 6.8.0.
WHAT I TRIED
- Does NOT help: KWIN_DRM_NO_DIRECT_SCANOUT=1 (verified with "show
compositing": composited, stripes remain), amdgpu.sg_display=0,
amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 (parameters confirmed in
/sys/module/amdgpu/parameters), 8 bpc instead of automatic 10 bpc, adaptive
sync Never, scale 100%.
- Does NOT reproduce: playing the same video with mpv on a text console
(Ctrl+Alt+F3), outside of Plasma.
- Fixes the stripes: KWIN_DRM_USE_MODIFIERS=0 (together with
KWIN_DRM_OVERLAY_LAYERS=0 and KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1 the stripes disappeared;
then bisected, USE_MODIFIERS=0 alone is enough).
- Side effect of KWIN_DRM_USE_MODIFIERS=0: slight stuttering of fullscreen
video (visible with a 60 fps test pattern: lavfi testsrc2). It is worse with
"Allow tearing in fullscreen" disabled and improves when the GPU is forced to
full clocks (power_dpm_force_performance_level=high). Possibly bandwidth/clock
related.
