Bug ID: 527546
Summary: Keyboard input goes to the first Sticky Note instead
of the clicked note in a wide panel
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First 6.8.0
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: Sticky Note widget
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: 1.0
SUMMARY
With multiple expanded Sticky Note widgets in a wide right-hand panel, clicking
another note allows text selection and context-menu paste, but typing goes into
the first note instead of the clicked note.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Use a Plasma Wayland session.
2. Add several Sticky Note widgets to a right-hand panel.
3. Increase panel thickness sufficiently to show the expanded note editors
directly in the panel (the affected panel is 200 logical pixels thick).
4. Click text in a second or third note and type a short marker.
OBSERVED RESULT
Typing enters the first note. Mouse text selection and right-click paste work
in the other notes. The affected installation has four notes in this panel.
EXPECTED RESULT
Keyboard input goes to the clicked note.

INVESTIGATION
In a separate isolated profile, clicking an editor produced focus=true,
activeFocus=false, while the panel had WindowDoesNotAcceptFocus and remained
inactive; typing opened search instead. This is related focus-acquisition
evidence, not an exact reproduction of the original first-note routing state.
Notes requests AcceptingInputStatus only after activeFocus is acquired, which
cannot bootstrap input when the panel refuses keyboard focus. PanelView also
explicitly focuses the first focus-chain item when entering accepting-input
status. Transient status loss while switching editors may contribute to the
first-note routing behavior; the original live transition was not traced.
A candidate requests panel input before forcing editor focus, maintains it for
focused inline panel editors, and defers only releasing the old editor's input
status. Saving remains synchronous so the inactive text binding cannot restore
stale saved content first. Compact popups are excluded from input acquisition.
The affected user confirmed that typing follows each clicked note and that an
edit survives immediately switching to another note and back with this patch.
RELATED REPORT
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=408379
This report concerns the multiple expanded-note case on current Plasma. It does
not assert that the historical report should be reopened or is the same defect.
ATTACHMENTS
notes-panel-input.patch
Supplementary Qt Quick regression fixture and results (see attachment README).
No note contents or panel configuration are included.
PROVENANCE
The candidate and diagnostic fixtures were developed with AI assistance (Codex,
including an Astra review) and interactively tested by the affected user. This
is a proposed fix for maintainer review, not a claim of comprehensive coverage.
