--- Comment #16 from matthias sweertvaegher <[email protected]>

good news, the mystery is finally cleared up and i have a fix.

i asked claude, and this is what he came up with:
```
Found the root cause on my system (Dolphin 25.04.3, openSUSE Leap 16.0).
My ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs had XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/", so Dolphin treated
my home folder as the Downloads folder. That gave it the special Downloads view
style (Details view, sorted by Modified descending).
In 25.04.3, ViewProperties::save() clears a folder’s stored properties (the
user.kde.fm.viewproperties#1 xattr) when they match the global defaults. My
global defaults are Name ascending, no grouping, folders first. Setting all
three on home made it identical to the defaults, so the xattr was cleared. On
the next load nothing was stored, so the Downloads style was applied again.
This explains why changing any two options was remembered but all three
together never were.
On master, save() initialises allDefault with !m_hasOwnDefaultStyle, which
prevents this. That looks like the fix for bug 521218 (fixed in 26.04.2). This
bug may be a duplicate of 521218.
Workaround for older versions: point XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR at a real folder instead
of $HOME.
```

this is how my user-dirs.dirs looked like:
```
$ cat ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run.
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/"
```
this file got updated (created?) april 2025, but obviously not in a correct way
(i do have all the matching folders).

so i updated that file with the correct corresponding folders:
```
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"
```
and everything works now! :party:

i can't believe i struggled for so long 🫠
