Bug ID: 527596
Summary: feature request: support identification of drives by
UUID as an alternative to using the device path
Classification: Applications
Product: plasma-systemmonitor
Version First 6.4.2

Platform: openSUSE
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED

DESCRIPTION
KDE System Monitor appears to identify drives and block devices by their device
paths such as /dev/nvme0n1 or /dev/bcache2. This can have unexpected results
when the paths are not persistent across reboots. Switching to device UUID
could fix this. However, details in bug report
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=494165 suggests that many users may expect
different external hard drives that are attached one at a time to be displayed
by the same sensor. --> Ask the user how they want the sensor to identify the
disk it monitors: by device path or by UUID.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create a sensor for a disk on a system where device order sometimes changes
with reboot
2. Keep rebooting until device order is different, e.g. /dev/nvme0n1 and
/dev/nvme1n1 are swapped.
OBSERVED RESULT
Sensor now shows data for some other disk.
EXPECTED RESULT
Sensor shows data for the same disk as when set up.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: openSUSE Leap 16.0
