Bug ID: 527604
Summary: [Regression 6.8.1] UI stutter and "Atomic commit
failed: EBUSY" on hybrid Intel/NVIDIA dual-display
setup
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.8.1
Reported In:
Platform: EndeavourOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: wayland-generic
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
Upgrading from Plasma 6.8.0 to 6.8.1 introduces desktop stuttering, frame
drops, and DRM atomic commit failures on a hybrid Intel/NVIDIA laptop driving
dual 144Hz displays under Wayland. Downgrading kwin and plasma packages back to
6.8.0 immediately eliminates the issue.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Run Plasma 6.8.1 on an Optimus dual-GPU laptop with an external HDMI display
connected directly to the NVIDIA dGPU.
2. Log into a Plasma Wayland session.
3. Observe UI stuttering/frame drops and inspect `journalctl -u
plasma-kwin_wayland.service`.
OBSERVED RESULT
Compositor suffers from frame drops/stutter and outputs DRM atomic commit
errors:
`kwin_wayland[1604]: Atomic commit failed: EBUSY`
EXPECTED RESULT
Smooth 144Hz frame presentation across both displays without DRM
page-flip/commit errors (as observed in 6.8.0).
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: EndeavourOS / Arch Linux (Kernel: 7.2.11-arch1-1)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.8.1 (Regression from 6.8.0)
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.31.0
Qt Version: 6.12.0
Graphics Platform: Wayland
HARDWARE INFORMATION
Laptop: Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55
iGPU: Intel CometLake-H GT2 [UHD Graphics] (Driver: i915) -> driving internal
144Hz panel (eDP-1)
dGPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Mobile (Driver: nvidia-open-dkms 615.78.08) ->
driving external 144Hz monitor (HDMI-A-1)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Downgrading all plasma 6.8.1-1 packages to 6.8.0-1 completely resolves the
issue on the exact same kernel and NVIDIA driver version.
This may be a regression introduced by the fix for Bug 527163 in Plasma 6.8.1
(commit regarding multigpuswapchain host memory workaround for NVIDIA GPUs).
