As indicated in the previous comment, 26.08.2 *appears* to work as I expect, but only if the clipboard content is an URL. If the clipboard contains free text when middle-clicking on the "new tab" (+) button, the text should be loaded in the location bar and the user-selected search engine should be pointed to it, exactly as if the user had typed that text in the location bar and hit Enter.
