Bug ID: 527652
Summary: NVIDIA EGL Wayland platform fails on Plasma 6.8,
Wayland clients fall back to llvmpipe
Classification: KDE Neon
Product: neon
Version First unspecified
Reported In:
Platform: Neon
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: Packages User Edition
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
CC: [email protected], [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
Since a recent neon update, Wayland EGL clients on my NVIDIA machine fall back
to Mesa llvmpipe. KWin itself still renders on the NVIDIA GPU. Only the Wayland
platform of the NVIDIA EGL driver fails; GBM, X11 and surfaceless work.
SYSTEM
- KDE neon User Edition (24.04 base), kernel 7.0.0-28
- KWin / Plasma 6.8.0, Wayland session
- GPU: Quadro P2000, driver 580.178.04 (Ubuntu nvidia-driver-580), nvidia_drm
modeset=1
- libnvidia-egl-wayland1 1:1.1.13-1ubuntu0.1 (Ubuntu)
- libwayland-client0 1.26.0-1+24.04+noble+release+build28 (neon)
- Mesa 25.3.6-0+24.04+noble+release+build35 (neon)
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Log into a Plasma Wayland session on an NVIDIA GPU with the proprietary
driver.
2. Run:
__EGL_VENDOR_LIBRARY_FILENAMES=/usr/share/glvnd/egl_vendor.d/10_nvidia.json
eglinfo -B
OBSERVED RESULT
GBM platform:
OpenGL core profile renderer: Quadro P2000/PCIe/SSE2
Wayland platform:
eglinfo: eglInitialize failed
X11 platform:
OpenGL core profile renderer: Quadro P2000/PCIe/SSE2
Surfaceless platform:
OpenGL core profile renderer: Quadro P2000/PCIe/SSE2
Without the override, "eglinfo -B -p wayland" reports llvmpipe. KWin's support
information shows "OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation".
With WAYLAND_DEBUG=1, the NVIDIA EGL driver binds no Wayland global during
eglInitialize. KWin advertises zwp_linux_dmabuf_v1 version 6 and
wp_linux_drm_syncobj_manager_v1, but no wl_drm.
EXPECTED RESULT
The Wayland platform initializes on the NVIDIA GPU, as it did before the
update.
IMPACT
Firefox 158 runs with "WebRender (Software)", and CSS backdrop-filter makes it
very slow (Mozilla bug 1988728).
WORKAROUND
Running Firefox through XWayland brings GPU rendering back ("WebRender" without
"(Software)" in about:support):
MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=0 firefox
To make it permanent, I added this line to ~/.config/environment.d/firefox.conf
(read at the next login):
MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=0
This only helps Firefox. Other Wayland EGL clients still fall back to llvmpipe.
WHEN IT STARTED
Two updates are candidates; I have not confirmed which one is responsible:
- 2026-10-09: libwayland 1.25.0 to 1.26.0
- 2026-10-19: KWin/Plasma 6.7.5 to 6.8.0, Mesa 25.2.8 to 25.3.6, Firefox 157 to
158
Could the neon libwayland or Mesa packages conflict with Ubuntu's
libnvidia-egl-wayland1 1.1.13? Should neon ship a newer egl-wayland, or
egl-wayland2, for Plasma 6.8 on NVIDIA?
