Bug ID: 527782
Summary: Allow disabling middle-click paste without disabling
the primary selection
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First unspecified

OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: xwayland

Target Milestone: ---
Since Plasma 5.26 (bug 441668) there is a setting to turn off middle-click
paste. On Wayland it is implemented as [Wayland] EnablePrimarySelection=false,
which removes the primary selection entirely: KWin no longer offers
zwp_primary_selection_device_manager_v1, and data-control clients no longer see
PRIMARY either.
That removes more than the paste action. Tools that react to selected text rely
on PRIMARY, e.g. screen readers / text-to-speech helpers that read the
currently selected text aloud, translation popups and dictionary lookups. With
the setting off, they stop working, so users have to choose between "no
accidental middle-click pastes" and "selection-based tools work".
Some background on why this matters to me: I'm building OpenReader
(https://github.com/ichliebekide/openreader), an open-source alternative to MWS
Reader for Linux. It reads selected text aloud anywhere on the desktop. I rely
on a tool like this in my daily life, and I'm also building it for other people
who depend on such a tool and want to switch to Linux, but couldn't so far
because there was no alternative. Being able to keep the selection available to
tools like this while turning off accidental middle-click pastes would make
that switch a lot easier.
Request: separate the two things, e.g.
- keep the primary selection (and data-control access to it) available, and
- add an option that only stops middle-click from pasting it (or make the
existing setting do only that and add a separate, advanced option to remove the
primary selection completely).
Steps to reproduce the current behaviour:
1. System Settings: turn off middle-click paste, log out and back in.
2. Select text in any application.
3. Run "wl-paste --primary": "The compositor does not seem to support primary
selection".
Expected: selection-based tools can still read the selection; only middle-click
paste is disabled.
