Bug ID: 527803
Summary: [WISHLIST] Add support for multi-threaded / parallel
file operations in KIO
Classification: Applications
Product: dolphin
Version First 26.08.2
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
CC: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
Use Case:
When copying large directory structures or high-volume datasets across
high-speed NVMe storage, 10GbE local networks, or high-bandwidth SMB/NFS
shares, single-threaded sequential transfers via KIO saturate neither the disk
I/O queue depth nor available network throughput.
Proposed Solution:
Introduce an option (or automatic thread pool allocation) within KIO / Dolphin
to handle batch file copy/move tasks using multiple worker threads (similar to
how CLI wrappers like fpsync or file managers like Double Commander manage
parallel IO streams).
Additional Context:
Should include safeguards (e.g., fallback to single-threaded sequential
mode on detected HDDs to prevent mechanical disk thrashing).
UI considerations: Consolidated progress bar showing total throughput
across active sub-threads.
I simply write this to ask if it can be done. multi threaded file copy/move has
been a feature in workstation versions of Windows for some time and it would be
nice if Dolphin/Kio had the same feature for faster file transfers. I hope you
will take this into consideration thanks Ozzy
