Bug ID: 527827
Summary: Dolphin: Turkish translation breaks date group headers
(Qt date format codes were translated, shows
"ÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖ, 2026")
Classification: Translations

In Dolphin with the Turkish locale (tr_TR.UTF-8), when files are grouped
by date (e.g. sorted by "Modified" with "Show in Groups"), the group
headers for older files are rendered as garbage like:
ÖÖÖÖÖÖÖÖ, 2026
instead of "Mart 2026".
Cause: in dolphin.po (tr), the Qt date format codes inside the msgstr
were translated into Turkish letters, and the literal-text quotes were
replaced with typographic quotes:
- "MMMM" (full month name) was translated to "AAAA". In Qt format
strings "A" is the AM/PM marker, which is "ÖÖ" in Turkish, so each
"A" turns into "ÖÖ".
- "dddd" (full weekday name) was translated to "gggg".
- The ASCII single quotes that mark literal text ('Yesterday') were
replaced with “ ”, so the literal words are parsed as format codes
too.
Affected entries (msgctxt "@title:group Date: ..."):
msgid "MMMM, yyyy"
msgstr "AAAA, yyyy" -> should be "MMMM yyyy"
msgid "dddd"
msgstr "gggg" -> should be "dddd"
msgid "dddd (MMMM, yyyy)"
msgstr "gggg (AAAA, yyyy)" -> should be "dddd (MMMM yyyy)"
msgid "'Yesterday' (MMMM, yyyy)"
msgstr "“Dün” (AAAA, yyyy)" -> should be "'Dün' (MMMM yyyy)"
msgid "'One Week Ago' (MMMM, yyyy)"
msgstr "“Bir Hafta Önce” (AAAA, yyyy)" -> should be "'Bir hafta önce' (MMMM
yyyy)"
msgid "'Two Weeks Ago' (MMMM, yyyy)"
msgstr "“İki Hafta Önce” (AAAA, yyyy)" -> should be "'İki hafta önce' (MMMM
yyyy)"
msgid "'Three Weeks Ago' (MMMM, yyyy)"
msgstr "“Üç Hafta Önce” (AAAA, yyyy)" -> should be "'Üç hafta önce' (MMMM
yyyy)"
msgid "'Earlier on' MMMM, yyyy"
msgstr "“Daha Önce” AAAA, yyyy" -> should be "'Daha önce' MMMM yyyy"
(The comma is dropped because Turkish writes "Mart 2026", not "Mart, 2026".)
I verified the corrected strings locally by compiling a fixed dolphin.mo
into ~/.local/share/locale/tr/LC_MESSAGES/. The headers then render
correctly, e.g. "Mart 2026", "Dün (Ekim 2026)", "Perşembe (Ekim 2026)".
Version: Dolphin 26.08.2, Qt 6.12.0, KDE Plasma on CachyOS (Arch).
Translation file: PO-Revision-Date 2026-06-19.
The same kind of mistake also appears in two other Turkish catalogs.
These are help texts only, not functional, but they are misleading:
- kdialog.mo: "...defaults to 'ddd MMM d yyyy'" is translated as
"'ggg AAA g yyyy'". A user who copies this format gets broken output.
- kate.mo (git log filter help): "The date format is yyyy-MM-dd" is
translated as "yyyy‒AA‒gg".
