bug log
DESCRIPTION
After locking the screen and turning the monitor off, then turning it back on
and unlocking, all desktop icons are moved to the left side of the screen and
my customised positions are lost.
Monitor: Gigabyte M27Q, 2560x1440 @ 165 Hz, connected by DisplayPort (DP-2),
the only monitor, scale 100%
Folder View: about 130 items on the desktop, sorting: manual, icons not locked
STEPS TO REPRODUCE (intermittent)
1. Arrange desktop icons manually.
2. Lock the screen.
3. Turn the monitor off with its power button and leave it off for an hour or
more.
4. Turn the monitor on and unlock.
OBSERVED RESULT
Icons are rearranged along the left side of the screen.
EXPECTED RESULT
Icons stay where I placed them.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Started around 20-21 Oct 2026. Plasma 6.8.0 was installed on 16 Oct and the
kernel was updated on 20 Oct. It still happens on 6.8.1. It happened
consistently until I updated the kernel again, and now happens less often (once
in three days), though I have locked the screen less often recently. The two
occurrences I timed followed about 1 hour and 2h20m with the monitor off.
Cycles of a few minutes were fine.
- Journal at the moment the monitor goes off (attached excerpt, 27 Oct, about 1
hour off): every Wayland client logs "There are no outputs - creating
placeholder screen", plasmashell logs many "requesting unexisting screen
geometry 0" / "available rect 0" lines, and powerdevil logs "Removing connected
display on bus 7". On earlier occurrences (22 Oct), kwin_wayland also logged
"Failed to create framebuffer: Invalid argument" around lock and wake. The
placeholder-screen lines also appear on cycles where the icons are NOT
scrambled, so they don't distinguish good from bad.
- At wake (22 Oct): a drm hotplug uevent for card1-DP-2, and powerdevil logs
"Adding connected display". kscreen-doctor afterwards shows the normal mode and
geometry.
- Copying a saved copy of ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc
back and restarting plasmashell restores the layout. That doesn't show whether
the saved positions were overwritten or only the displayed state was wrong.
- Forcing the connector on with video=DP-2:e (so no placeholder screen) kept
the icons in place in one ~8 hour test, but the display did not come back after
powering the monitor on until I pressed the PC's power button. I removed the
parameter.
- The config file ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc is 128 KB.
The screenMapping line is about 11.8k characters, which looks like one entry
per desktop item (131 items), so it doesn't look bloated. I emptied the
screenMapping value on 27 Oct as an experiment and don't yet know whether it
makes a difference. I haven't inspected the rest of the file.
- Related: tracker bug 503500. The Feb 2026 Positioner fix (commit b8b69100)
should already be in 6.8.1 and doesn't prevent this. Open MR plasma-desktop
!4055 describes saved positions being overwritten as screens change, but I
can't tell whether it's the same cause.
