Thanks, yes, that change appears to explain what we are seeing. The concern is
the resulting behavior: the two resolutions have substantially different
arrangements, but moving icons to fix one can disturb the other. We end up with
two desktops that barely resemble each other and are a garbled mess, rather
than either a consistent shared arrangement or reliable independent
arrangements.

My recommendation is independent saved layouts, with a sensible starting layout
for each new resolution:

1. When returning to a previously used resolution, restore its saved
arrangement exactly.
2. Manual icon moves affect only the current resolution.
3. On first use of a new resolution, copy the current arrangement, preserving
the row and column of each icon wherever it fits. Place only the icons that do
not fit into available spaces.
4. This initial adaptation must not overwrite the saved arrangement for the
original resolution.

This provides continuity when first switching resolutions, while allowing each
layout to be arranged independently afterward. If cross-resolution movement is
retained, could it be an explicit "Share icon positions across resolutions"
option rather than combining separate layouts with selective copying?
