Bug ID: 528115
Summary: Dolphin becomes unresponsive when a custom folder icon
is inaccessible (I/O error)
Classification: Applications
Product: dolphin
Version First 26.08.1
Reported In:
Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: view-engine: general
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
CC: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
Environment:
OS: Fedora Linux 44
Desktop: KDE Plasma (Wayland)
Dolphin: 26.08.1
Qt: 6.11.2
KDE Frameworks: 6.31.0
Filesystem: NTFS3 (affected directory)
Description:
Dolphin becomes unresponsive when opening a particular folder or viewing its
properties.
The affected folder is located on an NTFS3 filesystem and contains a .directory
file specifying a custom icon stored at another location, potentially on an
Rclone FUSE mount.
The .directory file contains:
[Desktop Entry]
Icon=/mnt/Data/RClone/Clouds/Yandex/Учёба/icon.ico
Attempting to access this icon directly returns an I/O error:
$ timeout 5 stat "/mnt/Data/RClone/Clouds/Yandex/Учёба/icon.ico"
stat: cannot statx '.../icon.ico': Input/output error
After renaming .directory to .directory.bak, the issue disappears completely.
Dolphin can open the folder normally.
Steps to reproduce:
Create a directory containing a .directory file with an Icon= entry pointing to
a file that returns an I/O error when accessed.
Open the directory in Dolphin or attempt to view its properties.
Observe that Dolphin becomes unresponsive.
Expected behavior:
Dolphin should handle the inaccessible custom icon gracefully, fall back to the
default folder icon, and remain responsive.
Actual behavior:
Dolphin becomes unresponsive. In my case, it also generated a crash report with
SIGABRT.
Additional information:
The crash report contains the following call sequence:
KStandardItemListWidget::paint()
KStandardItemListWidget::updatePixmapCache()
KStandardItemListWidget::pixmapForIcon()
QIcon::fromTheme()
QImageReader::supportsOption()
QFile::open()
QFSFileEnginePrivate::nativeOpenImpl()
open64()
This suggests that the issue occurs while Dolphin or Qt attempts to load the
custom icon.
Renaming .directory resolves the issue without modifying any other files.
I can provide the full crash report if needed.
