Bug ID: 528459
Summary: GX651AR Built-In secondary display exposed as
DisplayPort not recognized as an internal display,
Preventing Automatic Rotation
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.8.2
Reported In:
Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: multi-screen
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
I am using an ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo GX651AR running Fedora Linux 45, KDE Plasma
on Wayland.
This laptop has two physically built-in displays. Both panels are the same
model (ATNA60HR07-0).
The primary display is correctly detected as `eDP-1` and supports automatic
rotation.
However, the secondary built-in display is detected as `DP-1` (DisplayPort),
despite being physically integrated into the laptop.
KWin reports the following:
- Primary display (`eDP-1`): Auto Rotate Policy: Always
- Secondary display (`DP-1`): Auto Rotate Policy: Incapable
The secondary screen works normally, including displaying the desktop and
supporting manual rotation. Its only missing functionality is automatic
rotation.
Hardware and firmware details:
The secondary panel is connected through the Intel graphics DDI TC1 / AUX USBC1
path.
The BIOS VBT describes this connection as DisplayPort / Type-C / Thunderbolt
rather than eDP.
The connector also exposes firmware-node information associated with the
built-in secondary display.
The detachable keyboard affects the secondary display's hotplug signal:
- With the keyboard detached, the secondary display is connected.
- Attaching the keyboard generates an HPD event and the secondary display
disconnects.
- Detaching the keyboard reconnects the display.
Expected behavior
I would expect KWin to recognize this physically integrated secondary panel as
an internal display, even though the underlying DRM connector is reported as
DisplayPort.
The display should then be eligible for automatic rotation, just like the
primary eDP panel.
Actual behavior
KWin appears to determine whether a display is internal using its DRM connector
type. Since the secondary screen is reported as DisplayPort, it is classified
as external and its automatic rotation policy is reported as incapable.
I have been investigating a possible GX651AR-specific identification method
using the connector's firmware-node path and DMI product identification.
I would appreciate guidance on whether this should be handled within KWin's DRM
backend or whether the kernel DRM driver should provide additional information
to identify this panel as internal.
