Thanks, #10 and the start of #11 are exactly what I was after. Bug trackers
work when we understand the problem, being told to implement a solution without
that won't get anywhere.

As for your question:
Persistence has been in the spec since forver, and yes it is implemented on
GTK. It might be dubbed "expiration timeout" or "expires"
i.e "notify-send -t 0 hello world"
