Observed today as well, several times. It started happening after I set my
wallpaper to slideshow and to change every 2 hours. I believe the CPU spike
happens after 2 hours at the time it would switch the wallpaper but didn't
actually switch it (needs confirmation).
Once the plasmashell process went to 100% CPU, then I rebooted.
After a while it went to 50% CPU.
My setup:
- Dell XPS 13 Dev edition 9333
- openSUSE Tumbleweed
- i915 driver for Intel HD 4400 GPU (00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel
Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09))
- Xorg settings for GPU: AccelMethod=sna and TearFree=true
- Plasma 5.10.4
- no widgets on the desktop, only wallpaper with slideshow mode
- "system load" widget in taskbar
