The TIFF files generated partially are parsed automatically by tiff image loader from digiKam core. This one is based on libtiff, and the crash appear in this C library. There is no exception generated and catch-able by digiKam. So the problem must be fixed on libtiff. Please report this problem as UPSTREAM to Libtiff bugzilla. Note : digiKam has already an Emblend frontend which will generate TIF files in an hidden subdirectry not parsed by digiKam while files writting. When TIFF are done, there are moved in collection as there are ready to be imported in database. In this case, no crash appear.
