As I mentioned in comment #36 and comment #38, I am running Qt 5.9.4, and I can still easily exhaust all system memory by running a slideshow wallpaper in plasmashell. I don't know about the application icons thing. I do recall that I used to see the plasmashell process taking hundreds of megabytes of RAM and sometimes even over a gigabyte.
