You can still watch the file list building for about a second and scrolling is a bit sluggish, but it is not hanging and I can select a file with a name I already know fast enough. Its hard to compare to gtk now, because Gtk3 is much worse than the kde filechooser was when reporting the bug, there probably because of mime-magic on every file (which is a bit off topic, if kde isn't having the same issue here).
