Furthermore, opening the lid and logging in and closing the lid did not help either. I had to use the suspend button in the interface. It may be relevant to note that I have things set up such that the laptop does not suspend with the lid closed when an external display is attached (VGA connector in my case). So perhaps the fact that the external display was unplugged was not propagated to the relevant place.
