            Bug ID: 399844
Summary: "Event source" drop-down box is very wide; scrollbar
                    hard to notice
           Product: systemsettings
           Version: 5.8.6
          Platform: Debian stable
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: minor
          Priority: NOR
         Component: kcm_notify
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

Hi! I'm new to KDE and Linux, and early on, I ran into the following problem: I
wanted to disable the event sounds KDE makes when message boxes appear.

I could not figure out how to do so.

I explored every page of "System Settings" and I couldn't find the option.

I searched online, and I still couldn't figure it out.

I put up with it for a month, until in exasperation I asked on
unix.stackexchange. It was half question, half rant, because I expected to
ultimately be told that the noises were hardcoded and could not be changed and
that this was just a limitation of current versions of KDE Plasma (while living
in the Windows world I'd heard distant grumbles about KDE Plasma).

I received a detailed answer to my question a few days later, complete with
screenshots telling me exactly where to look. System Settings > Notifications >
Event source: "Plasma Workspace"; click "Disable sounds for all of these
events". And yet, I still could not figure it out. There was no "Plasma
Workspace" in the list of event sources.

I typed a response to the answerer, thanking them, but saying that their advice
must be for a newer version of KDE, and that I would have to wait for a distro
upgrade. Sadly my version of KDE had but ten items in the event sources list.

Wait, how many? I double-checked the count.

Finally, accidentally, I scrolled onto another entry in the list. "Oh!" I
thought! "A bug!! There ARE other event sources, but it's glitching out and not
listing them all properly."

And then I saw the scroll bar.

Almost two foot away, on the other side of the maximized window, on the other
side of the screen. Ah.

----

If I thought I was the only person to ever be confused by this, I wouldn't dare
to report my own stupidity. But assuming I'm not an especial idiot, then I'm
not the first person to miss that scroll bar, and thus miss out on KDE
functionality.

So I'd like to request that the layout code for the "Notifications" settings
panel be tweaked, so that the drop-down list "Event source" is no wider than
needed for its text, thus keeping its scroll bar within visual scanning range.
I believe it would be helpful for UI intuitiveness.

Thank you.
