I made a dedicated VM (virtualbox) to replicate the issue and it can be
replicated just fine. Restoring the session is just messed up: windows move
around, sometimes get maximized, etc.

In the VM below, konsole and kate are sized and placed in the left corner and
the right half of the screen respectively (using window tiling function). Once
you start a session, it will be messed up. I have noticed (in the VM) that
tiling is more prone to restore problems than a random-sized window somewhere
on the screen.
