SUMMARY
On the last couple of ubuntu releases with Gnome desktop, I cannot add Digikam
to the Dash (left side bar) as favorite.
This seems to have to do with the desktop icon.
This is a known issue between gnome desktop and QT applications from what I
read. Below are two related bugreports for Konsole.

The solution is to add a StartupWMClass=digikam line to the .desktop file
I did this by copying
/usr/share/applications/org.kde.digikam.desktop to ~/.local/share/applications
and adding the above line. After this, I could add digikam to the Dash.
