So yes I did put in some time trying to fix it. I am in Wilmington Delaware, USA. In order to make KStars use the external, homebrew based astrometry.net, you would need to go into the Astrometry settings in the align panel and uncheck the box that makes it use the internal solver and make sure it has the right path to the solver.
