SUMMARY
For about two releases, the battery widget has vanished from the systemtray. I
can add it to the panel separately, and then it does work, but the automatic
showing / hiding obviously doesn't.
It's like my systemtray doesn't find the battery. I can also not enable it in
systemtray settings, it's not shown there. The Power Management systemsettings
module works just fine. Also the power management plasma engine shows
hasbattery and other values correct.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. clean plasmashell config
2. restart plasmashell
3. observe no battery widget

I'm on Neon dev/unstable, just upgraded to Plasma 5.17
