I have just updated to 19.08.3 (from 19.04.3) in Gentoo and I just had the same
surprise.
Of course ctrl+w still works and there is a contextual menu (on which "close
document" appears with a specific icon) but there is no close button visible.
Not visible is not the same as not there. Clicking on the right of the tab does
close it. Which suggests it is just invisible somehow.
