On all operating systems it's possible to keep multiple versions of Krita
around.

On Linux: use the appimage, and just start the one you need
On Windows: download the portable zip version, unpack it somewhere (I use the
desktop) and start the one you want
On MacOS: download the dmg, extract and put the krita.app bundle somewhere (I
use ~/Desktop/v4.2.9/krita.app, for instance)

If you want, you can use the nightly stable build for Linux and Windows --
there's no working nightly for macOS yet, but we're working on that.
