I did enable that, thought it won't index if i disconnect the drive and
reconnect it after a while (this happened in Picasa) if i didn't check that
box.

Disabled this now, it doesn't hang anymore. Thanks for the suggestion! 
Not sure if it's indexing, though, no visual cue (there are so many files, 0%
for 5 minutes now), Picasa was popping up a lower corner of the screen
notification if it found any new images/videos.

Later edit: Checked the sample of digikam, seems to be doing the indexing in
the background :-)

Also, if anybody wants to get some inspiration from Picasa (from Google) -
discontinued project, here are the clean installation packages, they are a
backup i downloaded from google a few years ago. I suggest you scan them to be
extra safe on virustotal
