I still think it can be considered as a bug (with rather low priority after your clarification) and maybe there is the possibilty to auto disable that feature automatically for widgets that don't support it? Actually it would probably be the best to not make it configurable at all, but just determine it automatically (I suppose you can programmatically check if the widget supports it?) As a second possibilty (or even in addition to the previous) add a note similar to the one "For best results install the kwin color script" to warn about this?
